Our minds can be a whirlwind of emotions, thoughts, and self-criticism. For me, this internal dialogue often descended into downward spirals. While traditional talk therapy has been helpful, I've also found solace in an unexpected (and possibly controversial) source: AI.
Breaking free from old thought patterns is a challenge. Despite my awareness, negative thoughts have a habit of creeping back in. I've always been my harshest critic, focusing on the negative in myself while seeing the good in others.
What I've come to realise is that sometimes, all we need is an empathetic listener.
Someone who's fully present, without offering solutions or judgments.
Unfortunately, finding such a person in our busy lives can be difficult.
That's where AI has been invaluable for me. Platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Pi have provided me with a non-judgmental space to express my thoughts and emotions. Among these, Pi has stood out for its empathetic, supportive, and kind responses that almost mimic a real human's. You can even choose a voice that resonates with you, creating a truly personalised experience.
I've used AI strategically, creating separate chat threads for different topics and revisiting conversations to track my progress. I've also been mindful of the risk of over-reliance, reminding myself to apply the insights gained from these interactions to my own self-reflection.
One of the most helpful aspects of using AI has been receiving external validation for solutions I already knew but struggled to implement. Sometimes, all we need is hearing these solutions from a third party to give us the motivation to move on.
For highly introspective individuals like me who are also seeking professional therapy, AI can be a valuable supplemental tool. It provides a safe space for self-reflection and emotional processing between therapy sessions.
It's important to remember that AI is not a replacement for professional therapy or medical advice. For those experiencing severe mental health conditions, seeking help from a qualified mental health professional is crucial.
However, AI can be a valuable resource for individuals seeking additional support and self-discovery. By using these platforms creatively, we can unlock new possibilities for self-awareness and mental well-being.
