As we approach the end of the year, it's time for an update on a blog I shared back in June—a tale that took an unexpected turn, revealing a heartwarming surprise from an unlikely supporter.
You may remember my excitement when I announced that two of my artworks were purchased by a complete stranger in January. Little did I know, the universe had an unexpected plot twist in store for me, involving my loving husband and his desire to support my dreams.
Fast forward to July: my husband was sharing a work video with me when I noticed a familiar face. It was his secretary—the very same person who had bought my artworks earlier in the year! I immediately recognised her as the seemingly mysterious collector who had purchased "Flow of Life 1 & 2."
In that moment, the pieces started falling into place. I realised that my husband must have orchestrated the entire thing. Knowing my tendency for self-deprecation and doubting whether anyone would ever buy my artworks, he devised a plan to show his support while remaining anonymous.
His intentions were noble—to show me that someone believed in my work and to provide encouragement for my passion.
However, the realisation bruised my pride. In my mind, a sale somehow validated my work, and the revelation that it was my husband behind the purchase left me feeling momentarily useless. But as artists, we must remember that a sale does not equate to the worth of our work. While it can be challenging to internalise this belief, it's important to understand that the true value of our art lies in the creative process and personal expression—not in external validation or financial gain.
As time passed, I discussed this experience with close friends, who offered various perspectives and insights. They helped me see that I was in a very fortunate position: I had a supportive spouse who believed in my work, provided me with the privilege to pursue my passion, and was there for me every step of the way.
In reflection, I realised how blessed I was to have a life partner who, while not always vocal about his emotions, consistently demonstrates his unwavering support and love.
A special shout-out to my lovely friend Jinda, who back in July, suggested that I document this plot twist in a blog post. Thank you for the wonderful idea!
To my fellow artists: never stop chasing your dreams and counting your blessings. I hope that my story can inspire you to believe in yourself and never give up on your passions, no matter the obstacles you may face.
The artworks in question, "Flow of Life 1 & 2," hold even deeper meaning to me now. Their symbolism of life's journey and the importance of embracing your unique path resonates on a more personal level.
So, here's to the plot twist of 2024, the incredible support from my husband, and the invaluable friendships that enrich our lives.
May we all find love, encouragement, and camaraderie as we navigate our paths to self-discovery.
Sending you peace and love,
Caihui
